Feeling lonely after moving to a new city

The short answer

Loneliness after a move is normal: you lost your everyday contact all at once. It gets better when you combine small, regular social steps with kindness to yourself while it is hard.

Why it happens

The first weeks in a new city can be exciting and empty at the same time.

You lost the small daily contact that you didn't even notice before: the same faces, the easy chats.

I've moved and travelled a lot, and I learned that wherever you go, you take yourself with you. The outer steps work best when you also look inward.

Try this · about 5–10 minutes

Your first-month plan

  1. Pick two regular places: a café, a gym, a walking group. Go at the same time every week.
  2. Join one group with a shared activity.
  3. Say hi to the same people more than once. Familiarity builds friendship.
  4. Once a week, write down how you feel. No judging.
  5. Invite one person for a walk or a coffee within the month.
